    Biography

    As head of the Litigation Section and the Intellectual Property Law Litigation Practice Group, Stephen has spent almost 40 years trying complex commercial cases in federal and state courts. Known for his hard work, Stephen has a long and successful record as a trial lawyer who focuses his trial practice on intellectual property law cases in the Federal Courts across the nation. As a former President of the Virginia State Bar’s Intellectual Property Law Section and the local Federal Bar Association, he is particularly well known for his knowledge and ability to navigate the complexities of the Eastern District’s “rocket docket” and has appeared in over 125 patent cases in all four of the District’s Divisions along with many associated jury trials. Based on his trial experience and professionalism, Stephen has been inducted as a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers.

    • Co-counsel for major internet provider accused of infringing three complex patents in three-and-a-half-week jury trial in Norfolk Division
    • Represented cybersecurity company in patent jury trial against competitor and separate six-week bench trial on ZOOM against major components manufacturer resulting in one of the largest verdicts in nation
    • Represented cybersecurity firm in recent three-week jury trial resulting in one of the largest verdicts in District
    • Represented international computer company defending patent infringement claims in Richmond Division
    • Defended major pharmaceutical company in Multi-District Antitrust Litigation in the Norfolk Division
    • Represented several major pharmaceutical companies in patent infringement and antitrust class action cases in Norfolk Division
    • Represented major internet provider in multi-week jury trial accused of infringing multiple patents in Norfolk Division
    • Defended major internet provider in several patent infringement cases filed in all three divisions
    • Defended international manufacturer of outboard motors in three-week patent infringement jury trial in Alexandria Division

    • Represented major nonprofit tissue transplant organization in three-week patent infringement jury trial
    • Represented high tech security company in two-week patent infringement jury trial
    • Represented international media entity in music copyright infringement claim within the Fourth Circuit and the Norfolk Division
    • Represented client in wrongful termination counterclaim filed against and for a national distributor of delicatessen meats in trademark action filed in the Norfolk Division
    • Represented international grocery store chain in defending against trademark infringement claims in Richmond Division
    • Defended national grain supplier in trademark infringement and publicity matter in Richmond Division
    • Represented claim for preliminary injunction for trademark and trade dress infringement brought against a Hong Kong entity in a week-long bench trial in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York
    • Represented plastic components company in a two-week patent infringement jury trial in the Middle District of Pennsylvania
    • Represented major patent portfolio owner in patent claims against computer manufacturers in various divisions of the Eastern District of Virginia
